The Commissioning & Operational Readiness Process

The Commissioning & Operational Readiness Process

For a successful Commissioning & Operational Readiness assessment, we recommend that project teams utilize the following process:
  1. Prepare for the Commissioning & Operational Readiness workshop. A well-organized meeting contributes towards achieving buy-in on the Commissioning & Operational Readiness assessment. Ensure the proper stakeholders attend and provide supporting reasons as to why this process will benefit them to help promote participation. Ensure the meeting room and meeting logistics are organized well in advance and provide assessment material to participants ahead of the meeting.
  2. Conduct the Commissioning & Operational Readiness Assessment. This typically involves a neutral facilitator and co-facilitator (or scribe). The assessment will provide a transition readiness score indicating if the project is ready, borderline, or not ready to transition to the next commissioning phase. The assessment provides the data to clearly identify the areas for improvement to improve transition readiness.
  3. Focus on the low scoring elements and take action to complete the activities or deliverables required. This will drive the improvement in transition readiness so that the team is ready to move to the next commissioning phase.
  4. Re-assess transition readiness after the project team has had sufficient time to close some action items. During a subsequent Commissioning & Operational Readiness assessment, it is important to focus on missing factors. Through this iterative process, the team will ensure they are ready to transition and avoid a premature transition to the next commissioning phase.
