User Roles

User Roles

Carve uses a role-based security model. Five user roles are supported in Carve:
  1. Stakeholder
  2. Project Manager
  3. Facilitator
  4. Business Admin
  5. Company Admin
Each user is assigned a role based on the functional capabilities they require. The tables below summarize some of the capabilities of each user based on the edition of Carve being used.

Stakeholder

A stakeholder is the most basic user role in Carve. These users may be direct members of the project, executive managers, design or engineering consultants, or anyone else who you want to access your assessment results but without permissions to facilitate, manage assessments, or edit assessment data. The stakeholder role allows users to:
  1. View project and portfolio dashboards
  2. View published assessments
  3. Print assessments and reports
A stakeholder cannot create, edit, prepare, share, or delete projects, assessments, or portfolios; essentially this is a view-only user role.

Project Manager

Project Managers fall between stakeholders and facilitators in Carve, with limited access to edit projects and assessments. These users would typically be a project manager for one or many projects with facilitated assessments in Carve. Following an assessment, they would be responsible for updating action items within their project. Although Project Managers cannot create or conduct assessments, they can create self-assessments for their projects.
The project manager role allows users to:
  1. View project and portfolio dashboards
  2. View assessments and edit action items within an assessment
  3. Print assessments and reports
  4. Conduct self-assessments

Facilitator

Facilitators are typically the power users of Carve. The facilitator or co-facilitator (scribe) will use Carve to support assessment facilitations with project teams. They will walk through the assessment elements with the project stakeholders during the assessment. Low-definition items, element scores, gaps, and action items will be recorded in Carve as the assessment progresses. After the assessment, the facilitator will use Carve to finalize the action items and write the executive summary for the final report.

The facilitator role allows users to:
  1. Create, edit, and delete projects, assessments, and self assessments
  2. Import assessment data (from existing CII PDRI templates)
  3. Prepare the final report
  4. Share the final report with other users (PDRI reports only)

Business Admin

For clients with IT compliance requirements where managing users is a restricted function, we have introduced a Business Admin role.
The Business Admin has access to everything that the Company Admin role has, except for managing users, SSO, and API (in Professional and Enterprise Editions). With the new Business Admin role, clients will be able to support the following division of responsibilities:
